Arm lift

Oberarmstraffung

Arm lift (brachioplasty) is a surgical procedure that tightens and improves the contour of the upper arm region. It is suitable method when the skin elasticity of the arm has decreased and when the share of fat deposits is still rather low. In cases of extensive excess fat, arm lift can be combined with liposuction.

Reasons to perform an arm lift are excess skin that appears slack and wrinkled. The excess skin is usually the consequence of a fast and important weight loss. Another reason is the relaxation of the connective tissue due to aging. Some patients also suffer from excess skin due to functional disorders such as skin inflammation.

For an arm lift, the sagging skin between the armpit and the elbow is removed and the upper arm is reshaped. Please do not hesitate to contact us for a personal consultation. Our surgeons will review, explain in detail, and discuss your options regarding an »arm lift« at Park-Klinik Birkenwerder/Berlin.

How fast can I expect a result from an arm lift?

It often takes some time after aesthetic plastic surgery before the result is visible. However, if you have your upper arm lift done at Park-Klinik Birkenwerder/Berlin you can expect immediate success. The excess skin is gone and you can already see the tighter line of the upper arm, even if swelling and bruising still need to disappear.

How long does the result of an arm lift last?

With aging it is only natural that the firmness somewhat decreases again. If, however, you keep your weight stable and make sure you are overall in good shape, you will enjoy your beautiful and tighter arms for a long time.

The arm lift surgery

The type and length of incision of an arm lift depend on how much excess skin needs to be removed and where it is located on the upper arm.

Generally, the incision is made either on the inside or the back of the upper arm. It extends at most from the armpit to just above the elbow, but it can be markedly shorter. The incision is nevertheless not completely invisible, a fine scar is left on the inner side of the upper arm.

If needed, the skin removal is combined with liposuction. Then, the surgeon tightens the underlying supporting tissue with internal sutures and the skin is smoothened over the new contour of the arm. The incision will be closed with absorbable sutures that disintegrate over time and do not require suture removal. For optimal healing, the suture is secured on top with skin adhesives and/or tapes.

After the arm lift at Park-Klinik Birkenwerder/Berlin, the incisions are covered and dressings are applied to reduce possible swelling to a minimum. Instead of an elastic bandage we recommend to wear a compression garment, which we will order for you. A thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess fluid.

What are the complications that can occur in arm lift?

Any surgical intervention is associated with risks and complications. This includes unfavourable scarring, bleeding (haematomas) as well as poor wound healing. After your surgery, we are available for you around-the-clock.

Do I require anaesthesia for an arm lift and how long will I have to stay in hospital?

Before surgery, the anaesthetist will discuss with you the best suited anaesthetic procedure. In general, we recommend general anaesthesia for arm lifts. An arm lift takes about 2-3 hours. You will stay in hospital for 2 nights.

Important things to know – after arm lift

After an arm lift, the incision lines are not to be submitted to excessive strain, abrasion or movement. You may receive ointments and medication, which aid regeneration and avoid the risk of infection. Your treating surgeon will discuss with you in detail what to observe and tell you when you will be able to start your normal activities again.
